Frequently Asked Questions - Mochii

Read common questions about Mochii

What is the Mochii™?

Award-winning Mochii™ is a field-portable, high-resolution imager and spectrometer. Mochii was designed as a new class of analyzer to provide some never-before-available capabilities:

  • Portable - <15 kg, <100 W power, fits in the overhead bin of an airplane

  • Accessible - remote accessible, highest cost-efficiency -- lowest entry price and cost of ownership

  • Collaborative - team oriented and accessible by multiple simultaneous mobile devices

Mochii combines the best of both light and electron microscopes in the size of a coffee maker.

Mochii's main draws elemental analysis and portability, providing a sweet spot in the 1-10 um analyte size range. Routine image magnification of Mochii is ~1.5kx, stretching to 5-10kx depending on application and operator skill. The state-of-the-art SDD EDS (silicon drift detector energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer) detector provides the best light element detection available. Sample exchange time is typically under 5 min for small and/or dry samples.

How much does one unit cost?

Mochii starts at $48K for the imaging only unit. The spectroscopy-enabled version, which provides full featured x-ray spectroscopy and spectrum imaging, is $65K.

It has an integrated metal coater option available for $5,000, and we offer a variety of optical cartridge exchange programs that can fit your consumables utilization and pricing needs.

What are the physical dimensions of Mochii?

Mochii is 26 cm tall, weighs less than 15kg, and requires less than 100 watts to operate.

Is the Mochii commercially available?

Mochii is commercially available and we are shipping.

What is the lead time?

We can deliver a system 8-12 weeks from order date.

What are the different applications for Mochii?

The variability of nature and the technologies we build span many size ranges, including those invisible to the naked eye.

Specifically, applications for Mochii include:

  • Precise elemental analysis of micronic-size particles via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy – EDS

  • Nanoscale (sub-micrometer) imaging, via scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

  • Field-portable analysis microscopy

    • Time-critical on-site analyses; walk-on analyses (eliminating high-cost facility setup)

    • Hazardous environment (e.g. radiation sites)

    • Dispatch applications requiring larger numbers of smaller lower-cost instruments at greater number of sites

    • Applications with differing site operator/technician skill vs central office expert skill

      • Field surveyors reporting back to central office

      • Space station / space vehicle research, engineering, and safety

      • Classroom environments

  • Remote, after-hours, and collaborative analysis situations

Mochii can be placed pretty much anywhere, whether the corner of your office, on a kitchen counter, or in the back of a service vehicle.  Our customers have found some amazing ways of using Mochii's capabilities.  For example, it has been used in classrooms and outdoors, has served underwater for the NASA's 23rd NEEMO mission, and deployed on the International Space Station.

Does you offer service contracts?

Service contracts, including predictive consumable column exchange programs are available.

Does the machine come with a warranty?

Mochii carries a standard limited warranty for 1 year from delivery date.
